11 year old Toy Manchester Terrier/Chihuahua Limping

I have a Toy Manchester Terrier/Chihuahua. She will be 11 yrs old in December, weighs 13.1#. She has always been in good health but now she is experiencing a problem with her left hind leg/hip. She doesn't seem to be in pain but is limping or carrying her leg. I took her to a vet that prescribed Rimadyl, 25mg for pain/inflamation. She is to take 1/2 pill twice daily. She had this last year and now it has returned. This has been going on for the past 3-4 weeks and doesn't seem to be any better. What do you suggest I do now???    ~ Lois Swartz

Good Morning,

There are several things that could be causing her discomfort. She may be in pain, dogs don't usually cry when they are in pain (this is a protective mechanism). Because she is holding it up and not using it normally, we generally interpret this as a pain behavior. She could have several orthopedic problems, such as hip dysplasia, a luxating patella (on the knee) or a ruptured ACL (on the knee). I think she should be examined again, to determine which of these issues is causing the pain. A sprain or a minor problem should have resolved by now.
