Question about jogging with a 5 1/2 month old puppy

Q

Hi. My boyfriend and I just adopted a pit bull puppy. He is about 5 1/2 months ago. We have been going on long walks and some short runs with him (about 1 1/2 - 2 miles). I typically run between 3 -6 miles by myself and would like to take him with me. I've read that if you run long distances with a puppy too much, it can damage it's joints and bones. How far can I safely run with my puppy at his age and when can I increase the distance. .  ~ Maggie

Hello Maggie,

It is generally recommended not to do any forced excercise with puppies until their growth plates are closed. This includes anything your puppy would not normally do on his own (such as running on a leash). Walking on a leash should be fine at this age, but I would wait until about 16 months to take him running. This will allow his growth plates to close. Happy running!
