Question about a pitbull puppy with eye discharge

My 6 1/2 month pittbull has red eyes and green /white discharge coming from them. I have noticed these symptoms for the last 12-24 hours. I am concerned and unsure what to do. Is this an emergency which would require immediate vetenarian attention or can I treat this myself. If so what should I do? I would greatly appreciate any assistance you could provide. Sincerely, Justin knappick

Eye discharge in young dog could be from a variety of different causes. Corneal ulcers (a scratch on the the eye), allergies, or a viral infection would be some of the more common causes in a young pit bull. Also, less common but more serious conditions such as dry eye and glaucoma can cause eye discharge. Your dog should be examined by a veterinarian. They will likely want to do several diagnostic tests on the eyes to determine the specific cause of the discharge. I would not treat this condition at home, as you could possibly causes serious damage to the eyes without knowing what you are treating, treating with the wrong medication, or ignoring a potentially serious condition.
